Clinical Pathology

What is clinical pathology?

Clinical pathology supports the diagnosis of disease using laboratory testing of blood and other bodily fluids, tissues, and microscopic evaluation of individual cells. Our veterinarians provide use our new in-house laboratory equipment to provide results in a timely, and efficient manner to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients. We also work with an external veterinary laboratory for more specialist tests that may take 12-24 hours for blood results or up to 14 days for biopsy results, depending the test being performed.

What is a pre-anaesthetic blood test?

Pre-anaesthetic blood testing is a test performed on the day of surgery but prior to your pet undergoing any anaesthesia. Some owner’s elect to perform this test as a peace of mind prior to surgery. As all anaesthetics hold some degree of risk, this blood test checks, among other things, your pet’s liver and kidney function. These two main organs are crucial in breaking down and excreting the anaesthetic. If the pre-anaesthetic blood testing results are normal, we can proceed with confidence. These tests become part of your pet’s medical record, providing a baseline for future reference.
