Intestinal Worms

Occur commonly in both cats and dogs, some pups can even be born with infestations.

Include roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm.

We recommend worming every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age and then each month until 6 months of age, then every three months for life.

Heartworm

A large worm which lives in the right side of the heart and blood vessels nearby causing tiredness, coughing and weight loss. Transmitted by mosquitoes.

Occurs mainly in dogs but very rarely in cats. We recommend a prevention program for dogs, as treatment high risk procedure once infestation has occured.

There are a number of medications available, which are given monthly or yearly. We can discuss the suitability of each of these for your dog and help you choose the most suitable program for your situation.

Prevention spot-on, tablets or chews (monthly) are available for cats but not routinely use due to the low incidence in this species.

Fleas

One of the most common problems of pet ownership, can cause general itchiness, allergic reactions and the transmission of tape worm in your pet and annoying itchy bites for you.

Fortunately the last few years has seen the release of a number of extremely effective prevention products that come in a range of chews, tablets and spot on treatments.

Ticks

There is almost nil incidence of paralysis tick infestation in our local area, however if you are visiting coastal areas your pets may be at risk.

The paralysis tick causes weakness progressing from the hind legs forward to the chest and front legs and can lead to complete paralysis and death.

If you are travelling along the coast, please call in and see us for advice on the available products to prevent this serious problem occurring in your pet.

Microchipping

Required by law for all dogs and cats, it involves the implantation by injection of a uniquely numbered chip between the shoulder blades.

Although a large bore needle is used, most animals feel minimal discomfort especially if done as young puppies or kittens.

The identification number can be read with a specialised scanner  and the details of ownership can then be checked on the computer registry.

There are a number of registries for recording the details with the NSW government one being compulsory . Once the animal is chipped, you then need to register your pet with your local council – this is a once only procedure.

It is much cheaper to register a desexed pet than an entire animal, so although microchipping is  required by 3 months of age (or at the first change of ownership – whichever is first), registration is not required until 6 months allowing time for you to have your pet desexed prior to registration.

Desexing

Highly recommended for all dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets to avoid the birth of unwanted animals, to reduce aggressive and territorial behaviour, the problems associated with animals in season and various other health problems.

Generally carried out between 5 and 6 months of age, desexing is a sterile surgical procedure requiring a general anaesthetic.

Pets can go home in the evening of the operation but may be a little sleepy that night. Most pets experience little discomfort after the surgery.
